Spanish conquistadors returning from Mexico first introduced tomatoes to Europe. Considered poisonous by the rich, who used them ornamentally, only the poor ate the “wolf peach” for centuries. By the 1800s, the tomato finally became associated with Italian food. China now leads the world in tomato growth. Aztec design elements permeate the inside and outside of this piece.
